We believe in experts who actually understand your situation, your finances, and your needs — so they can advise you on the right coverage or product, or tell you honestly whether you even need a life insurance policy. Below: the 12 questions we hear most often from English-speaking residents and expats in Spain, each answered by our Legal team and reviewed for accuracy against our policy documents.
Frequently asked questions about life insurance in Spain
Can I buy life insurance in Spain as an expat without a NIE?
You can get a quote and start the process without a NIE, but you'll need your NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) or DNI plus a Spanish bank account to finalize the policy. If you're newly arrived in Spain and don't have your NIE yet, our advisors can hold your application for you — we'll contact you once you have it to complete signup.
You do NOT need Spanish citizenship. Residents (TIE holders), students, and permanent residents are all welcome.

Is the whole process really in English?
Yes. Signup, quote, contract, customer area, modifications, and claims are all handled in English. Your Life5 policy document is available in both English and Spanish. When our claims team deals with AXA on your family's behalf, they translate the Spanish documents for you — your family never has to learn insurance-specific Spanish at the worst possible moment.

Am I covered if I travel or move abroad?
Life5's policy is designed for residents of Spain. Short trips abroad (under 30 days) are fully covered. Two exclusions to know:
- Stays abroad longer than 30 days are not covered — any claim that occurs during a trip or posting longer than 30 days outside Spain is excluded.
- Travel to countries classified by the Spanish Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores as "not recommended for travel" is excluded regardless of trip length.
If you plan to move permanently out of Spain, contact us before you go. We can help you cancel without penalty or guide you on keeping the policy active.
Exact policy wording: "Quedan excluidos de cobertura los siniestros ocurridos fuera del territorio nacional en estancias superiores a 30 días de duración, en los países a los que el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores haya calificado como países no recomendados para viajar."

Do I need a medical exam?
For most applicants, no. Life5 uses an online health questionnaire that takes a few minutes — no clinic visits, no blood tests, no physical appointments. You answer honestly about your medical history from your phone or computer, and we give you a personalized quote instantly. AXA underwrites policies using actuarial data for most applicants.
When additional info may be requested: very high capital amounts or specific medical histories may trigger AXA to request a recent medical report from your GP — you're told upfront before committing.

Who is Life5 and who actually pays if something happens?
Life5 is authorized by the Spanish DGSFP under license J3945 as a correduría de seguros (insurance brokerage). We design the product experience, handle signup, customer support, and claims end-to-end in English.
AXA Aurora Vida, S.A. (DGSFP authority C0711) is the risk carrier — they underwrite the policy and pay the claim. AXA is one of the largest insurers in the world, with €100B+ in annual premiums globally.
When a claim is filed, AXA pays the beneficiaries. Life5 handles the paperwork and the translation between your family (in English) and AXA (in Spanish).

How is life insurance taxed in Spain?
If the insured (person covered) dies, the beneficiaries pay the Impuesto sobre Sucesiones y Donaciones (ISD) on the payout, at rates that vary by Autonomous Community. Several regions have large bonificaciones (discounts) for spouse/child beneficiaries — e.g., Madrid at 99%, Andalusia with a €1M exemption for close family.
Spanish Supreme Court rulings (STS 242/2018 and follow-ups) have extended the EU Court of Justice decision (C-127/12) to apply non-discrimination to non-EU beneficiaries (UK, US, etc.) — your relatives abroad don't pay higher rates just for being non-resident.
Tax situations vary by individual circumstances. Consult a Spanish tax advisor for your specific case — we can introduce you to English-speaking advisors we trust.

Up to what age can I get life insurance?
Life5 accepts applications up to age 74 (Life5 Seniors product) — one of the most generous age limits in the Spanish market. Many insurers cap coverage at 65–70 or require a full medical exam past a certain age.
Standard Life5 Family is available from age 18 to 65. Life5 Seniors extends that window to age 74 at signup, renewing annually.
The Total Permanent Disability (TPD) rider has a lower age cap — typically age 64 — since the rider pays out if you're permanently unable to work. Premiums adjust with age and are fully disclosed upfront.

What capital should I insure?
Rule of thumb: 10× your annual income, or 3–5× net income + outstanding debts (mortgage, loans).
Quick checklist:
- Clear the mortgage (outstanding balance).
- Cover 1–3 years of household expenses for your family.
- Add an education buffer if you have children.
- For expats: add €5,000–€15,000 for repatriation costs + an international transfer cushion.
Our English-speaking advisors model the right number with you in a 15-minute call.

How do I choose beneficiaries — and can they live abroad?
You can name one or multiple beneficiaries and specify how the payout is split (percentages). If you don't specify, the payout is split equally among named beneficiaries. Most expats name their spouse and/or children.
Beneficiaries abroad are fully supported. Our claims team processes payouts:
- To European bank accounts via SEPA transfer (standard, no fees).
- To non-European bank accounts via SWIFT. International transfer fees are disclosed upfront; beneficiaries do not need to open a Spanish bank account.
All claim documents can be submitted in English; we translate to Spanish for AXA.

How fast does the claim process work?
Standard timeline in Spain, per insurance law: within 40 days from the date the insurer receives the full claim documentation, AXA must pay. In practice, cleanly documented claims are typically paid within 2–4 weeks.
Required documents: death certificate, beneficiary ID (DNI / passport), bank account details, and a claim form. Our English-speaking claims team helps your family gather everything — from anywhere in the world.
